02.27.14 - Philip Smart, Jackie Mittoo and Burning Spear

Philip Smart

Jackie Mittoo

Burning Spear

Another sad event this week as another reggae great, producer and engineer whose career spanned over five decades, Philip Smart passed away. I'm no writer so please learn about him if you don't already know. I start the show off with one of my favorite songs of his, a Paragons tune off the Eclipse label "A Place Called Zion". I will soon do a show that covers more of his dancehall hits. What I had planned was a show based around the birthdays of two Studio One legends, Jackie Mittoo and Burning Spear. Not only do their musical catalogs play well off of one another, they actually played together many times. Rest in peace to Mr. Smart and Mr. Mittoo and may Spear live another lifetime. 08.15.13 - Marcus Garvey / Yabby You Special

LISTEN TO THE ARCHIVE AT JAMAICAROCK.COM

This show is for the memory of both Marcus Garvey (17 August 1887 – 10 June 1940) and Yabby You aka Vivian Jackson (14 August 1946 – 12 January 2010). The first hour contains a lot of Burning Spear and songs dedicated to Marcus Garvey and Africa. The second hour is filled with the productions of Vivian Jackson as well as songs that he did with King Tubby and other great artists. Our good friend and writer Sherman Escoffery happened to stop by the studio and I chatted with him a bit as well, check him out on the Large Up site as well as his own. Check the archive.

12.13.12 - Moody Studio One

LISTEN TO THE ARCHIVE AT JAMAICAROCK.COM

I was inspired by the celebration of the man Mr. K (the Deadly Dragon Studio One maven) this night to do an all Studio One set. So it starts moody and gets a little, say, happier towards the end and also has some Studio One Christmas songs in there as well. I hope you enjoy, check the archive.
